Donald Trump protest planned for Swindon

Swindon is set to join a long list of other towns and cities across the country in protest against Donald Trump following his controversial decision to ban refugees from entering the U.S.

Mr Trump has also put a stop to the US’s refugee programme, indefinitely banned Syrian refugees, and suspended all nationals from six other Muslim-majority countries – Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

Protestors in Swindon will gather in the town centre from 6pm at Wharf Green.

Over 3,500 Swindon residents have signed a petition calling on the government to withdraw Trump’s invitation to take part in a state visit to the UK later this year.

The petition has now reached over 1.3 million signatures, which makes it one of the most signed petitions since the scheme first started.

A decision on whether MP’s will debate this issue is set to take place on Tuesday.

South Swindon MP Rober Buckland has been quoted to say:

“With such a large number of signatories from across the country I think that a debate in Parliament will happen,” he said.

“I fully share the strong concern about the President’s current migration policy and I think that it is the wrong approach.

“We have been visited before by foreign leaders with whom we have differences.

“A visit by the US President or any other leader does not mean for one minute that we have to compromise on our principles. It is an opportunity for us to make our voices heard directly.”
