Swindon Town boost attack with loan move for Brentford winger

Swindon Town have added further pace and attacking options with the loan signing of winger Michael Olakigbe from Brentford.

The move continues a clear recruitment pattern at the County Ground, with the club strengthening multiple areas of the squad rather than focusing on one position at a time.

It follows recent midfield-focused business, including a contract extension for Gavin Kilkenny and the loan arrival of Aidan Borland from Aston Villa.

Olakigbe arrives in Wiltshire with a strong development background across several leading academy systems in English football.

He began playing at grassroots level with Erith and Belvedere and East Soccer Base before moving through the youth ranks at Queens Park Rangers and Fulham.

After joining Fulham’s academy in 2018, he progressed from Under-14 level and was awarded a scholarship at the end of the 2019-20 season.

In July 2022, Olakigbe joined Brentford on a four-year deal and quickly made an impression with the club’s B team.

He played a key role in their Premier League Cup-winning 2022-23 campaign and scored seven goals across the season, a notable return for a wide player.

His performances led to senior involvement, with inclusion in a first-team matchday squad in April 2023 before making his competitive debut later that year.

Olakigbe started Brentford’s EFL Cup second-round win over Newport County in August 2023 and went on to make 11 substitute appearances across all competitions during the first half of the 2023-24 season.

During that period, he signed a new long-term contract with the Premier League club, reflecting the regard in which he was held.

He has since gained senior EFL experience through loan spells at Peterborough United, Wigan Athletic and Chesterfield.

Across those spells, Olakigbe made 36 appearances in League One and League Two, scoring goals at each club and adapting to the physical demands of senior football.

He returned to Brentford B following his most recent loan and was part of their Professional Development League title-winning squad during the 2024-25 season.

At international level, Olakigbe has represented England at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-20 level.

He has earned nine caps and scored twice for the Under-18s, and was part of the England side that won a four-nation tournament in Zagreb in 2022.

The loan move gives Swindon another attacking option capable of stretching defences and increasing tempo in wide areas.

For Olakigbe, it offers the opportunity for regular senior football and responsibility as he continues his development.

Everyone at Swindon Town has welcomed the winger to the club ahead of the remainder of the season.
