The development was crowned Residential National Site of the Year at the Modeshift STARS National Travel Awards.

The accolade reflects ongoing efforts to encourage greener and healthier travel choices across the growing neighbourhood in Swindon.

The travel plan is delivered by Swindon Borough Council’s Swindon Travel Choices team on behalf of Wichelstowe LLP, a joint venture between the council and Barratt Redrow.

It includes a range of initiatives aimed at reducing car use and promoting walking, cycling and public transport.

New residents receive tailored travel information when they move in, helping them consider alternatives to driving.

The scheme also features a dedicated Wichelstowe walking magazine and regular events such as travel roadshows, guided walks and rides, and bike maintenance workshops.

Incentives have been introduced to encourage people to change their travel habits.

These include taster bus tickets, voucher codes for free rail journeys, discounts at Mitchell Cycles and a borrow a bike scheme, allowing residents to trial pedal and electric bikes for up to six weeks.

Families have also been involved in the programme.

During the summer holidays, a treasure hunt app encouraged residents to explore the area, with small prizes on offer.

The hedgehog trail, designed to help people discover local green spaces, will remain in place and is expected to expand as the community grows.

The awards ceremony took place in London and was attended by more than 200 delegates.

The event celebrates organisations and developments promoting walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport for everyday journeys.

Rob Powe, Development Manager at Wichelstowe LLP, said:

“It’s been a pleasure to be involved in this year’s sustainable transport initiatives, especially welcoming families to the hedgehog trail and seeing them enjoy the new boardwalk at Wichelstowe.

“This award highlights the progress we’ve made so far, but we’re excited about upcoming projects like extending the canal towpath and path network.

“We hope residents and visitors continue to embrace the active lifestyle being shaped here, choosing walking and cycling as their preferred way to travel through the site.”

Claire Fleming, Travel Plan Officer at Swindon Borough Council, added: “We’ve done so much work in Wichelstowe to make sure residents have the best access to sustainable travel.

“Our walking trails have been a huge success and it’s great to see our hard work be rewarded in this way.

“But we still want to do more and we’re hopeful we can build on this positive momentum and help make sustainable travel more accessible across the Borough.”

Wichelstowe’s latest success positions it as a leading example of how large scale developments in Wiltshire can put sustainable travel at the centre of everyday life.
