The warning was issued by Councillor Leigh Jackson after two unauthorised clothing and footwear banks appeared next to legitimate donation points at the site.

Checks with site operator GLL confirmed the additional banks had been placed there without permission.

The bins raised several concerns. They displayed no charity name or branding, no registration numbers and no contact details.

The absence of this information strongly suggests the banks are not linked to any recognised organisation.

Working with Haydon Centre management, the units have now been taped up and reported for removal. One of the bins had also been positioned in front of a fire exit, creating a potential safety risk.

The discovery comes despite strong public support for genuine causes. Official recycling banks operated in support of Wiltshire Air Ambulance have raised nearly £75,000 over the past year at sites across Wiltshire, including the Haydon Centre.

Further suspected fake banks have now been identified elsewhere in North Swindon.

Locations include the The Shield and Dagger and the Manor Farm pub.

There are also increasing reports of similar bins appearing in other parts of the town.

Efforts are now underway to log known locations and report them to the relevant authorities for investigation and removal.

Residents are being reminded to check donation banks carefully before using them. Legitimate charity banks will clearly display registered charity details, contact information and official branding.

Councillor Jackson said it was disappointing to see attempts to divert donations away from genuine causes, but added that continued support from local residents remains vital.
