PT Supervisor Lindsey Plant and Activities Manager Holly Singleton will line up for the 26.2-mile race in London this Sunday 27th April, marking their marathon debut.

Lindsey is raising money for Phoenix Enterprises Swindon, which supports young adults with learning and physical disabilities into employment.

“I wanted to raise some money for charity and really push myself,” she said.

Holly is running for Meningitis Research Foundation, a cause that holds personal significance.

“It’s something I had when I was a little girl, so it’s really important to me,” she said.

The pair have spent the past 16 weeks training while juggling work and daily life.

“It’s been tough, but something I’ve really enjoyed,” Holly said. “Definitely out of my comfort zone, but great to do it alongside Lindsay.”

Lindsey said staying consistent has been challenging.

“It’s relentless. You get maybe two days’ rest a week, and I’ve also been playing football, so there have been a few niggles,” she said.

They have trained together throughout and say supporting each other has helped them through the tougher sessions. Although both say their priority is to finish and raise funds, there is a friendly rivalry.

Lindsey, who has previously completed a marathon in five and a half hours, is hoping to cut her time to five hours. Holly is targeting a finish in under four hours and 45 minutes.

“I am quite competitive,” Holly said. “If Lindsay catches me, it means I’m running very slow.”

Lindsey said: “I’ve got no ACL and a torn meniscus, so I’ve got my excuses ready.”

Support from members at David Lloyd Swindon has boosted their fundraising. A recent bake sale at the gym attracted strong support and increased donations.

Holly has raised £2,700 so far via her Justgiving page, surpassing her £2,300 target. Lindsey is aiming for £2,000 and has raised more than £500 to date on her fundraising page.

“People understand how hard a marathon is,” Lindsey said. “It’s no mean feat.”

Holly added: “Running for a charity gives you an even bigger reason to get over that finish line.”

With race day approaching, both are focusing on rest and preparation.

“Lots of pasta,” Holly said. “Carb loading.”

“Staying injury-free,” Lindsey said.

They will join thousands of runners on the streets of London on Sunday, supported by members of the wider Swindon community.
