Staff at a Swindon car dealership have swapped four wheels for two and cycled the length and breadth of the country in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Employees at Pebley Beach Hyundai rode from dealership to dealership without leaving the comfort of their own showroom – as the marathon trek took place using exercise bikes.

Setting off from Hawkins Motors in Truro, the riders headed east to Hyundai UK HQ in High Wycombe via Torbay Hyundai, Richmond Hyundai in Southampton, Tunbridge Wells Hyundai, and North London Hyundai before heading back west via their own Paddington Drive showroom to Wessex Hyundai in Newport, South Wales.

The riders then turned their handlebars north to Brindley Hyundai in Wolverhampton, Johnsons Hyundai in Liverpool, Evans Halshaw Hyundai in Leeds, and Border Hyundai in Carlisle, before dismounting at Arnold Clark Hyundai in Glasgow.

Fundraisers rode three at a time, with cumulative mileage being recorded to determine how far the static cyclists had travelled.

And while some of the more serious cyclists in the firm clocked up mega miles, there was a chance for everyone to have a go.

Event organiser Jane Newton – who got the idea for the initiative after enrolling in spinning classes – said: “Staff from sales, servicing, admin and our technicians took part.

“And while most people were happy to cycle on the flat, the event naturally brought out the competitive streak in many cyclists, who competed for the best time and distance, or switched the bike’s resistance to ‘hilly’ or ‘mountainous’ just to prove they could.”

The event was held as part of the national Hyundai Dealerships Stand Up To Cancer campaign on Tuesday, October 24. More than £700 has been raised so far, with donations being accepted at www.Pebley.co/su2c
