The lifesaving squad at Wiltshire’s largest Emergency Department are on the lookout for new recruits hungry to kickstart their own rewarding career in a great location.

Healthcare professionals with a zest for working as part of a close knit team and in high-octane situations are encouraged to attend an upcoming open day at the Great Western Hospital that could prove to be the first step towards a new career unlike any other.

Taking place on Saturday 13 May, the event is a chance for qualified nurses to join a team whose job is to help more than 78,000 people every year return home to their family after suffering the often serious and life-threatening effects of illness and injury.

Those coming along will be able to tour the state-of-the-art department, meet existing members of the team – many of whom feature as stars of Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s brand new recruitment campaign – and get to grips with some of the jobs carried out by the team every day, such as plastering broken bones.

Attendants can also fast-track the time taken to start their new career by sitting an interview on the day for one of the many nursing positions currently being advertised.

Ashley Oakshott, Interim Head of Recruitment, said: “Working in the Emergency Department is not for the faint-hearted.

“With more than 200 people coming through its doors every single day, the department is always a hive of activity with the team working around the clock to provide lifesaving care and treatment.

“It can be challenging, but the rewards speak for themselves. Going home at the end of a shift knowing you’ve played a part in saving somebody’s life is a feeling that no other job can offer.

“The team in the Emergency Department are more than just colleagues, they’re a solid group of friends who support each other through whatever the day throws at them and they’re always excited to welcome new faces.”

In the last 12 months the department has gone through a host of changes and improvements, including a massive recruitment drive which has increased staffing levels by more than 20 per cent.

Three years ago in 2014 the department benefitted from a multi-million pound refurbishment and the creation of a dedicated children’s section.

Located next to the main department, the Children’s ED is a protected area in which children up to the age of 18 can be cared for in a more private and calming environment.

To register a place at the open day, which takes place in the Academy between 10am and 3pm, visit the NHS jobs website, www.jobs.nhs.uk and search for the Great Western Hospital.
