A group of 56 Polish pupils, aged 13 and 14, visited Lawn Manor Academy to experience lessons, explore the school and meet youngsters from the UK.
The visitors were welcomed by 43 of the school’s Welcome Ambassadors, who helped them settle in and learn about life at a British secondary school.
During the visit, the Polish pupils joined lessons, toured classrooms and played board games with their Swindon counterparts in the library.
They also watched a music and dance showcase, with Lawn Manor pupils performing songs and routines they had selected and choreographed themselves.
Year 10 pupil Lydia, who played bass guitar during the showcase, said:
“It was interesting showing them the classrooms and what it’s like to be at school in the UK.
“We found out there were quite a few differences in the subjects they learn compared with us, and they were surprised that we all wear a uniform.
“I wish schools in the UK didn’t have uniform and had a shorter school day, like in Poland!”
Fellow Year 10 pupil Tilly, who has been a Welcome Ambassador since Year 9, said the role had helped her become more confident.
She said:
“Each year you get to do more things and take on bigger roles. It’s cool to show people around, welcome them and make them feel included.”
The Welcome Ambassadors regularly help visitors to the academy, including prospective pupils, families and international groups.
Lawn Manor pupils, including Lydia, are expected to travel to Poland next year for a return visit to experience the country’s education system.
Headteacher Russell Langdown said:
“We’re very proud of the welcoming and inclusive environment here at Lawn Manor and we think it’s incredibly important to embrace and celebrate what makes us different, as well as giving our pupils an international perspective on learning and life.
“By giving our pupils the opportunity to spend time with their Polish peers, they can expand their outlook and see different perspectives, all things that will benefit them as they go through life.”
