Held in the museum’s grounds, the session invited participants to dig up natural clay before shaping it into pots, animals, sculptures and other creations inspired by the natural world.

Children also learned about the life and legacy of Swindon-born writer Richard Jefferies during an interactive storytelling session led by an actor in character.

The workshop formed part of this year’s Signal Festival, which offers young people across Swindon the chance to take part in creative activities, learn new skills and build confidence during the summer holidays.

The festival also aims to showcase the town’s cultural offer as Swindon prepares its bid to become UK City of Culture 2029.

Among those taking part was Councillor Kate Tomlinson, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Education, who attended with her children.

She said:

“It was wonderful to take part in this workshop with my children and see so many young people enjoying a creative day outdoors and it’s great to see so many different events going on for families in Swindon this summer.

“Signal Festival is a brilliant event which provides fantastic opportunities for young people across Swindon to learn new skills, build confidence and express themselves through creativity, while showcasing the rich culture and talent we have in our town.”

Signal Festival has hosted a wide range of workshops and performances throughout the summer, encouraging children and young people to engage with arts, culture and local heritage.

The Richard Jefferies Museum event combined creative activities with storytelling, giving families the opportunity to learn more about one of Swindon’s best-known writers while enjoying a day outdoors.
