Cadets from 1244 (Swindon) Squadron Air Cadets took part in a fundraising bag pack on Saturday, assisting customers with their shopping while collecting donations to support the unit’s activities.

The event raised around £300, with the money set to help fund equipment, training and opportunities for local cadets.

Throughout the day, cadets spoke with shoppers about their experiences in the organisation, with many customers sharing memories of their own time in the cadet forces or asking about opportunities available to young people today.

The Royal Air Force Air Cadets offers a range of activities including aviation, adventure training, sport, first aid, leadership development and community volunteering.

Fundraising plays an important role in helping squadrons such as 1244 (Swindon) continue providing those opportunities for young people across the town.

The money raised will contribute towards future activities, including camps, training exercises, competitions and community projects in Wiltshire and beyond.

Squadron volunteers thanked shoppers for their support, with many people stopping to donate and chat with cadets throughout the day.

Harry Harnett, a cadet with 1244 (Swindon) Squadron Air Cadets, said:

“I’ve gained so much confidence since joining the Air Cadets and have had opportunities that I probably wouldn’t have experienced anywhere else. Giving up a Saturday to help raise money is a small way of giving something back. We were really grateful for all the support from shoppers, and every donation helps create more opportunities for young people in Swindon.”

The event also highlighted the contribution young people make to the local community, with cadets giving up their weekend to support their squadron and help create opportunities for future members.

As youth organisations across the country continue to face financial pressures, fundraising efforts remain vital in ensuring groups such as the Air Cadets can continue providing affordable activities and valuable life experiences for young people.

Anyone interested in joining 1244 (Swindon) Squadron Air Cadets as a cadet or volunteer can find more information through the squadron’s social media channels and the RAF Air Cadets website.
