Jenny Law, who represents Wiltshire Explorers, has been selected to take part in the 2027 World Scout Jamboree.

The international gathering brings together Scouts aged 14 to 17 from around the world for cultural exchange, outdoor activities and collaborative challenges.

Jenny secured her place following a selection camp, although she said the process felt informal.

“They never really told us the criteria,” she said. “It was just like, ‘you’re a good person, we’re happy for you to represent us.’”

Each participant must raise £4,000 to cover travel, accommodation and activities. The total also contributes towards funding a place for a scout from a lower-income country.

“We have to pay for someone else to go as well,” Jenny explained. “We never find out who it is, but we’re helping someone else get that opportunity.”

Rather than being directly funded, those attending are encouraged to raise the money themselves.

Jenny has been holding market stalls in Swindon and Cricklade, selling drinks, snacks and handmade keyrings, as well as running games to attract donations.

“Whatever we can make, really,” she said.

She has so far raised around £1,500 and believes she is keeping pace with others in her group.

“I’m about the same as everyone else, so I’m not behind,” she said. “I think I’ll probably reach it.”

For Jenny, the main draw is the experience itself.

“It’s a chance to meet people from literally every country,” she said. “There’s a tradition of trading badges and scarves, and there’s going to be days where you try food from all around the world. It’s going to be so fun, I can’t wait.”

The jamboree is held every four years and is widely regarded as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young people.

Jenny said scouting has also helped build her confidence.

“I’m here talking to random people at a stall,” she said. “I’ve made so many friends. It’s such a good group, we’re all friends and we do things I’d never do without it.”

Despite the £4,000 target, she believes the fundraising model makes the trip accessible.

“The idea is you raise the money through things like this,” she said. “So in theory, anyone can do it.”

With a deadline set for spring 2027, Jenny will continue fundraising at markets across Swindon and nearby areas.
