A total of 32 rapid chargers will be installed at the retail park, replacing the existing slow units currently in place.
The new chargers will be provided by InstaVolt and will take the place of older devices operated by Pod Point.
All 32 units will be located between McDonald’s – Orbital Shopping Park and Lidl, operating during the centre’s normal opening hours.
The change represents a significant shift in how the site will function for motorists.
Slow chargers typically deliver between 7kW and 22kW, often requiring several hours to provide a substantial charge. Rapid chargers, commonly rated at 50kW or more, can add considerable range in around 20 to 40 minutes depending on the vehicle.
The upgrade is expected to reduce waiting times and improve bay turnover. It will also increase overall capacity as electric vehicle ownership continues to rise locally.
Public charging provision across Wiltshire has grown in recent years, reflecting national trends as drivers transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles ahead of the planned 2030 ban on new sales.
While rapid and ultra-rapid chargers are often concentrated along motorways, retail parks are increasingly being used as secondary charging hubs. Locations such as the Orbital provide access to shops and food outlets, allowing drivers to charge while they spend time on site.
With 32 bays planned, the installation marks a substantial expansion in infrastructure for North Swindon.
However, the effectiveness of the new layout will depend on traffic flow, clear signage and appropriate enforcement to prevent misuse of charging bays.

As demand for electric vehicles increases, reliable and accessible charging infrastructure is becoming an essential part of local transport provision.
