4 Self-care Tips for Foster Carers

4 Self-care Tips for Foster Carers

Fostering is incredibly rewarding, but it has ups and downs, just like all other parenting. Many foster carers put everything into ensuring their children in care have the best home environment, have the best experiences and feel welcome and loved. However, they still need to find time and different ways to ensure they are taking care of themselves, which is the best way to ensure they continue doing the same for their foster children.

Find Something That You Can Look Forward To

Foster carers should find things that they love doing alone or with others. We are not talking about prioritising your needs over those of your foster children, but instead finding things that you like to do and that reinvigorate you. This could be as simple as having coffee at your favourite restaurant or putting on a movie you have been meaning to watch.

Develop Healthy Habits

A busy life can lead to you developing bad habits very easily. Since you may not have time to take care of yourself, it is easy to fall into habits like not sleeping enough or not eating well. Remember that your body will treat you how you treat it, too; treat it well, and it will treat you well.

Getting into healthy habits will require adjustments, but you can start eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, exercising and drinking enough water. It will also be encouraging for your foster children to pick up these healthy habits if they see you enjoying them and the benefits they have.

Get Support

Sometimes the care a person needs is to feel connected to other people, especially people who have been where they are, so they understand their situation better. Talking to such people can have a profound effect on mood and stress and be instrumental in helping a foster carer feel less alone.

Fortunately, foster care agencies give you numerous opportunities to connect with other foster carers, whether in support groups or through the various events they hold. Some also have tailored support since no single approach works for all foster carers. Foster carers looking for agencies with an extensive history of excellent support should visit orangegrovefostercare.co.uk and talk to their representatives and social workers to see why their support services are an excellent fit for so many foster carers.

Make Time for Yourself

If you cannot find time for self-care, you will not do it. Finding even a few minutes to take care of your mental, emotional or physical health can be incredibly beneficial.

You can take the time to go for a walk, meditate, or distract yourself by doing something you have always wanted to do. What you do with this time will depend on what you need for yourself, so think about it carefully to ensure your “me” time is beneficial.

Caring for yourself as a foster carer will help you do a better job of caring for your foster children. Self-care can require work, such as when developing new, healthier habits, but it can also be as easy as finding time to do the things you love.
