Swindon’s railway museum has been recognised as one of the region’s premier visitor attractions after it scooped a top gong at an awards ceremony last night.

STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway won the Leisure and Tourism Award at the annual South West Business and Community Awards.

The event, which was held at the Double Tree Hilton in Swindon, saw 200 guests from the business and charity worlds come together to celebrate the region’s most ambitious, inspirational and exciting businesses, charities and individuals.

A record-breaking 88 entrants were shortlisted this year across the award categories and the judging process was overseen by local entrepreneurs who came together to scrutinise the finalists and select the short-listed nominees from the 150 nominations.

Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for STEAM, said: “We know here in Swindon what a wonderful museum STEAM is, but it is always nice to receive external recognition.

“I am extremely proud of the team at STEAM for the work that they do and this award really is for them, as they work extremely hard to make the museum a welcoming and friendly attraction for everyone who visits.

“I would also like to invite anyone who hasn’t been to our ‘award-winning’ museum to do so because it really is a fantastic family day out.”
