The Swindon branch of the Royal British Legion are launching the 2017 Poppy Appeal this Saturday.

The first ever Poppy Appeal was held in 1921 following the establishment of the Royal British Legion after the First World War.

The tradition of an annual two minute silence in memory of those who gave their lives during conflict was also established at this time.

The Legion continues to help service men and women, veterans, and their families almost a century on from its initial formation.

They also champion the remembrance and safeguarding of the memory of those who have given their lives.

Phil Nobbs, Vice Chairman of the Swindon RBL, said: “Last year’s Poppy Appeal in Swindon raised a staggering £106,000; a record amount for Swindon and the highest in Wiltshire.

“It is so heart-warming that the people of Swindon are so supportive and generous. We even have small children spending their pocket money on poppies or other RBL fundraising items. It is so important for youngsters to appreciate the sacrifice made by millions of service men and women in all past conflicts”.

This Saturday, 28 October, there will be a short service at the Cenotaph in Regent Circus for the Dedication of the Garden of Remembrance at 11:00am, where the Mayor of Swindon will receive the first poppy of the start of the Poppy Appeal.

There will also be an Armistice Commemoration Service at the Cenotaph at 11.00am on Saturday 11 November which will be attended by local dignitaries and Royal British Legion branch members.

The Annual Remembrance Sunday Service will be held on Sunday 12 November at 11.00am at the Cenotaph.

Members of the public are very welcome to attend these events.

The Mayor of Swindon, Cllr Maureen Penny, said: “The demand on the Legion’s resources continues to grow, but ‘The Royal British Legion’ will always be there, not only to help those affected by the World Wars and conflicts over the years, but also those injured or traumatised in more recent operations, and to support their families. As Mayor of the Borough, may I ask you all in the weeks preceding Remembrance Day, to buy a Poppy and wear it with pride”
