An operation to crack down on speeding motorists took place across Swindon and the surrounding area yesterday (Tuesday 28 March 2017) by Wiltshire Police under the banner Operation Pegasus.

Police officers, Special Constables, PCSOs and Community Speed Watch teams were deployed across the town as well as in Chiseldon, Wanborough, Highworth and South Marston.

In total, 12 fixed penalty tickets were issued; the majority were for excess speed – the fastest speed recorded was 47 mph in a 30 mph limit.

Other offences were: no insurance, children not correctly restrained and driving whilst using a mobile phone.

More than 80 motorists were stopped in total (including the 12 issued with Fixed Penalty Notices) – discretion was used and they were mainly warned for speeding offences. All drivers stopped were also reminded of the new legislation surrounding mobile phones.

As part of Wiltshire Police’s on-going work with schools, to keep children safe from traffic, high viz patrols were also carried out by PCSOs at a number of local schools – reminding parents of being mindful of and courteous to pedestrians when driving and parking their vehicles close to schools.

Sgt David Tippetts said: “Operation Pegasus has been organised due to our research in to road traffic collisions in the Swindon area; its aim primarily is to protect road users and pedestrians from harm.

“From our activity yesterday it’s clear that the majority of drivers are responsible. “There will be further activity in the coming months to target drivers who use their vehicles in an anti-social manner and flout the law on the road.

“However in the meantime, anyone who sees any motorist breaking the law – please contact us.”

If you can help us in anyway with this, please contact police on 101 or anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
