Mario, Tom, Jodie, Millie and Ethan began their challenge at 9am on Friday 9th October and crossed the finish line at 9am this morning, Saturday 10 October, after cycling through the day and overnight.
The team took part in the 24-hour cycle-a-thon as part of a wider fundraising effort involving Aldi colleagues across the Swindon area.
The challenge saw participants take turns on an exercise bike, keeping the pedals turning throughout the 24-hour period while raising money for a charity supporting young people diagnosed with cancer.
As the hours ticked by and tiredness began to set in, members of the local community were encouraged to visit the Stratton store and show their support.
Local resident Russell Holland highlighted the team’s efforts in the Stratton Saint Margaret and South Marston In Touch Facebook group while the challenge was still under way.
He wrote:
“Shout out to Aldi Stratton staff Mario, Tom, Jodie, Millie and Ethan who are doing 24 hours of cycling from 9am to 9am to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust please stop by to support they are getting a bit tired.”
Despite the physical demands of the challenge, the five colleagues reached the 9am finish on Saturday morning, bringing their fundraising effort to a successful conclusion.
The wider Aldi cycle-a-thon fundraising page had recorded £7,718 towards its £20,000 target when previously checked, although the figure covers the wider campaign rather than the Stratton team alone.
The fundraiser is supporting Teenage Cancer Trust, a national charity which provides specialist nursing care, youth support workers and dedicated hospital facilities for young people aged 13 to 24 who have been diagnosed with cancer.
Aldi has supported Teenage Cancer Trust since 2017, with colleagues across the country taking part in fundraising events ranging from cycling challenges to marathons and skydives.
The supermarket and its customers have now raised more than £13 million for the charity, with a commitment to reach £20 million by 2031.
Funds raised through the partnership support specialist cancer services and help young people access age-appropriate care during treatment and beyond.
For the Stratton colleagues, Saturday morning marked the end of a demanding overnight challenge, with their efforts contributing to the wider fundraising campaign.
Donations can still be made through the Aldi 24-hour cycle-a-thon fundraising page.
