The seven day surveys have been arranged by borough councillor Marco Di Pinto in partnership with Swindon Borough Council’s traffic management team. Monitoring will take place on both sections of Ermin Street, Oxford Road and Stratton Road after the school holidays.
Cllr Di Pinto has also received the results of a recent speed survey carried out on Grange Drive.
The data collected will be used to support requests for Wiltshire Police to deploy mobile speed cameras in the area. It will also be submitted as evidence for potential Community Speed Watch schemes where the survey results justify them.
The announcement has been welcomed by residents, with many saying speeding is a persistent issue on local roads.
Nicky Kidd said:
“Happens multiple times a day on Stratton Road. Same culprits usually. Thanks Marco for supporting this issue.”
Chris Chequer said concerns extended beyond the roads included in the surveys. He said:
“Wheeler Avenue and Headlands Grove needs to be lowered to 20 as it’s used as the rat run through from Beechcroft to Cricklade Road.”
Alan Wilson also backed the move. He said:
“Sadly speeding is rife everywhere. I wish you well in your attempts to curb those who don’t think The Highway Code applies to them anymore. Hit them with fines. It’s the only deterrent that may make them change their bad habit.”
Cllr Marco Di Pinto said speeding was one of the issues most frequently raised with him by residents. He said:
“Speeding is one of the issues that has been raised with me most frequently by residents across our area, and I have been working hard to ensure that action is taken.
“I am pleased to confirm that I have successfully arranged with the SBC traffic management team for speed surveys to be carried out on both sections of Ermin Street, Oxford Road and Stratton Road.
“The surveys will take place over a seven day period in September, after the school holidays, and will provide detailed data on traffic speeds at these locations.
“Once the results are available, I will use the evidence gathered to continue requesting the police to deploy their mobile speed camera in Stratton St Margaret and Coleview. I will also submit the data to support a request for the police to consider establishing a Community Speed Watch scheme in areas where the survey results justify it.
“I know that speeding remains a significant concern for many residents, particularly near homes, schools and local facilities. While there is no quick fix, I am doing everything I can to secure measures that will help improve road safety and address residents’ concerns.”
He thanked Swindon Borough Council’s traffic management team for helping to progress the surveys and said residents would be updated once the findings become available.
The surveys are expected to be carried out in September, with any future enforcement requests based on the evidence collected.
