Swindon Town moved to the top end of the League Two table after a narrow one-nil win over Crawley Town at the Nigel Eady County Ground.

A second-half penalty from Ollie Palmer proved decisive in a tense contest, as Town held firm to secure three important points going into the festive period.

Ian Holloway’s side came into the game in strong form following a three-nil South West derby victory away at Bristol Rovers.

That win saw goals from Joe Snowdon, Ollie Clarke and Aaron Drinan, although Drinan was unavailable against Crawley after receiving a second yellow card in the previous match.

Crawley arrived in Wiltshire searching for their first win since early November and sitting close to the relegation places.

Defender Josh Flint attempted to influence proceedings by stepping out from the back, but clear chances were limited for the visitors.

The breakthrough came in the 53rd minute when Swindon were awarded a penalty.

Palmer calmly converted from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give the hosts the lead.

Crawley pushed forward late on, but Town defended resolutely.

Goalkeeper Connor Ripley was required to make several important saves as the visitors looked for an equaliser.

The result leaves Swindon level on points with the league leaders at the Christmas break, underlining their promotion credentials.

Crawley remain just above the relegation zone and will be hoping to halt their difficult run of results in the coming fixtures.

Away from the pitch, the club this week released a statement confirming its support for midfielder Ollie Clarke.

Swindon said it stood by the player and reiterated its duty of care, while confirming it was addressing the matter responsibly.

The afternoon ended with a disciplined home performance and a crucial victory, as Swindon continued their push towards the top of League Two.
