Moving to a new home can be an exciting experience, but there are a lot of things to do in preparation that can be less fun to do.

Although you might be looking forward to settling into your new living space, first, you need to organise all of your belongings, pack them up in boxes and haul them to your new abode.

To make the moving experience a little less stressful, consider the tips below and how they can help you have an easier transition from your current home to your new one.

Get Rid of Junk

Over the years, you will have likely gathered many items that you no longer need or want. These might have been impulse purchases, misguided gifts from friends and family, or items that have needed fixing but you just never got round to doing so.

Whatever the origin story of your home’s clutter, if you want to have a truly fresh start in your new house, take this as an opportunity to declutter and offload some of that junk that’s taking up space.

You can do this by either donating to charity, selling items online, or if they are completely beyond redemption, take them to your local waste centre and dispose of them responsibly there.

Consider Storage Options

Depending on the nature of your move, you might require some additional storage solutions for your larger or more valuable items.

Whether it’s for temporary storage or something more long-term, look at hiring a storage unit where you can safely keep the belongings you can’t take with you but don’t want to get rid of.

This might be because you’re downsizing, or you want to move these things into your home at a later date once you’ve redecorated, or perhaps you’re moving overseas for a few years.

Most towns and cities have various storage unit services available, and most can offer rolling contracts at reasonable prices.

Home Maintenance

As well as packing up your stuff and shipping it to your new house, you must remember to leave your current home in good shape for the new residents.

If you can see that there is a little bit of maintenance work required, whether that’s a new coat of paint in the hallway, or switching out an old bulb for a new one, take the time to do this.

If you’re renting your current property, your landlord will expect you to leave it in respectable condition if you want to get your security deposit back.

Consider hiring an end of tenancy cleaning service to make sure you don’t miss a thing, and your landlord will be satisfied.

Create a Schedule

Although it might seem as though you have plenty of time between now and your moving date, you’d be surprised at how quickly those weeks will pass.

Make sure you’re allowing yourself enough time to organise and pack up your home by creating a schedule. By the end of week one or two, aim to have the decluttering process finished with, for example.

You must also remember to book a moving company or van rental in advance, so you’re not caught out on the day of your big move.

Make sure moving house remains a positive experience by using these tips to prepare yourself for when the day finally arrives.
