Wide-ranging services to support older people in the Swindon area were
showcased at an event staged to mark national Older People’s Day.

Swindon South MP Robert Buckland officially opened the event at Ellendune
Community Centre in Wroughton, which was organised by care at home provider
Bluebird Care Swindon, Wroughton Mobility Store and Aster Living.

Organisations running information stands and giving way goodies included the
Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK Wiltshire, U3A, Prospect Hospice and Swindon
Town Football in the Community.

Health and Wellbeing Ambassadors gave visitors free health checks, including
BMI, cholesterol and blood pressure. And music was provided by from
Ellendune Entertainers.

Mr Buckland praised the organisers for staging the event, the second of its
kind to be run in the borough by Bluebird Care Swindon.

“It is fantastic to bring together so many local groups which do so much to
advance the needs of older people,” he said. “Sometimes older people feel
very isolated and don’t know what support is available, but they don’t need
to suffer in silence.

“There’s a lot going on in Swindon and Wroughton to help older people, so
what better way to mark Older People’s Day than to bring them all together
under one roof.”

Ben Curtis, managing director of Bluebird Care Swindon, said: “We were
really proud to be a sponsor of today’s event. We like to work with other
organisations which also support older people, so together we can provide a
better service.”
