Petition launched to save 22 market businesses from closure

A petition has been launched in a bid to save Swindon’s Tented Market, and the 22 small businesses within it from closure.

Swindon Borough Council want to demolish the market, which will force 22 micro and small businesses to close, in order to build units for food and drink outlets.

Jo Heaven, who has recently opened a business inside the market said: “Swindon Tented Market is being threatened with demolition to replace 22 thriving small businesses with a two tier building which provides restaurants and a cafe – as if there are not enough vacant catering sites in Swindon to choose from!

“The owners of the site did not notify the market traders so we only heard when neighbouring businesses received letters from Swindon Borough Council (who also appear to be in favour of the plan).

“No alternative locations have been put forward so it is likely that all 22 businesses will close as they cannot afford the higher rates and rents that larger units in the town centre demand.”
