One elected representative against borough councillors’ pay rise

Just one Swindon Borough Council councillor, the Liberal Democrats’ Stan Pajak, has voted against taking an increase in pay for his elected role.

Councillors are currently paid a basic allowance of £7,880 but an independent panel recommended a £340 increase in pay taking it to £8,220.

On top of the basic allowance increase, councillors with ‘special responsibilities’ like being the Mayor, will receive a rise between 14% and 17.5%.

All 56 of Councillor Pajak’s colleagues voted for the increase despite the council making cuts to libraries and adding parking charges at two of the town’s country parks.
