Council leader David Renard has this evening agreed to support refugee fundraising efforts by placing a donation box at the council offices.
Yesterday, we reported how Conservative Councillor Renard was still deciding on whether or not to support the cause, but this evening, he agreed to the donation box being placed at the council’s offices.
Donations will go to Swindon-Calais Solidarity, which regularly visits the refugee camp in Calais to take much need supplies.
Councillor Renard announced his decision on Twitter, where he tweeted Labour’s Councillor Jim Robbins saying: “Subject to meeting the guidelines of the institute of fundraising, I am happy to support your fundraising request”.

Councillor Robbins thanked him, saying: “Pleased that you made this decision!”
Anna-Maria Edwards, of Swindon-Calais Solidarity said: “We are so pleased to hear about Councillor David Renard’s decision to allow a donation box to be placed in the Swindon Borough Council offices.
“For us this is a real show of solidarity and support which is so indicative of Swindon as a whole.”
