One of the great things I love about the arts in Swindon, is the variety. There really is something for everyone. Sometimes though, you get an unexpected surprise.
As surprises come, this was a very pleasant one, which I got on the night when I visited The Victoria, best known locally as The Vic, to watch local stalwarts of the music scene, 1000 Planets on Friday 9 October.
1000 Planets were great, and on top form as ever, but it was their support act, Jack Moore that really stole the evening for me. More on Jack later though…
With a loyal following and a polished performance, 1000 Planets delivered their ‘Killing Joke Set’, with a number of songs from the very influential heavy rock band, Killing Joke. “We’re more a tribute act than covers band with this set”, lead singer Dave told me whilst chatting to the band before their show.
Whilst it was certainly loud, the 1000 Planets gave a clean sound in their delivery, and gigging since 1995, are clearly well practised at what they do.
1000 Planets can be seen quite often at The Vic, so keep your eyes peeled for their return!
By complete contrast in terms of musical style though, the support act for the evening Jack Moore, provided a more easy listening performance. Being more familiar with the heavy rock to follow, I was quite surprised to find such a diverse set being delivered – and it certainly didn’t disappoint.
Jack played a short set of seven songs, five of which he had written himself. His show was confident, clear, engaging, and thoroughly entertaining. It was when I spoke to Jack that I got my biggest surprise though. Having delivered a set that most seasoned musicians would be proud of, Jack told me that he was only 18-years-old.
From just down the road in Calne, Jack performs around ten gigs a month at the moment, balancing performing and doing a degree in commercial music.
“I prefer playing songs I’ve written myself”, Jack explained, “but I also like the way audiences interact more with songs they are familiar with”.
I asked him about his influences. “I’m a big fan of Frank Turner.” He replied. “And, Queens of the Stone Age have a big impact on my music too”.
Definitely a musician to watch out for!Jack Moore on Facebook 1000 Planets on Facebook
