Media Make-up students at New College are currently preparing for their end of year show, taking place on 5th June. First year students to HNC level are involved in putting the exciting evening together.

Each year, the show is based around a theme; previous years have focused on Movies, Bedtime Stories and styles from around the world. This year is very different again, with the main inspiration coming from one of the most popular films of the year, ‘The Greatest Showman’.

The idea came about not only due to the popularity of the film, but the idea that there are so many elements of the circus that can be explored. Level 2 students are working on creating props for the show, as well as modelling the creations. BTEC second year students are creating pieces that centre around superstition and HNC students are looking at the idea of phobias.

A range of skills are put into practice to bring the show together, including hair styling, make-up, costume, props, fashion, prosthetics and body painting. It’s a great opportunity to bring all of these elements together and showcase the work to family, friends and the general public.

Focusing on a circus theme gives students the chance to be as creative as possible. Some of the work that is going to be displayed will be abstract, with a focus on the unexpected and less obvious elements of a circus.

Students will have the opportunity to work with and appreciate the skills of so many students and staff members across the college. Photography, Film, Media and Dance students are all involved in bringing the show to life alongside the Media Make-up department.

Media Make-up Programme Leader, Gemma Mulrooney said: “Our show this year is heavily influenced on the box office hit, ‘The Greatest Showman’, you will see the theatre turned into a circus with live stilt walkers and a whole variety of weird and wonderful characters! All learners will have designed and handmade hair, makeup, costumes and props, so it gives them the opportunity to show off a variety of their skills.”
